Exchange Server Address Book migration is the process of transferring your precious Address Book data from one file version to another file version. Migrating the Address Book from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000 is a very common practice.
Address Book migration is generally done to get advantage of added features of later version. Users feel the need of migration when the Exchange 5.5 can not fulfill their requirements or it becomes complex to manage addresses.
Exchange 2000 Server has an outstanding feature to create list of users and their corresponding email addresses. It is very powerful and lets you create incredibly specific rules based upon criterions like “all users in NJ that aren’t in development.”
It is a very handy process to migrate the Address Book from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000. The process goes through several steps as mentioned below:
- First of all you need to export Address Book views. It could be done manually. To do so, select all branches of Address Book on right pane and from menu select File-> Save Windows Contents and save information in a file with .CSV format.
- Change the attributes as required. Here you can add all the directory fields unlike the Address Book views in Exchange 5.5.
- Construct LDAP search by making a fake branch address list in system manager of Exchange 2000. After creating address list, copy its LDAP search query string.
- Paste it into your script to the purportedSearch string except that of fake branch name which are extracted from the CSV file.
- Now find the full directory name of Address Book container in Active Directory. Drill down to the parent “Branches” address list container and copy its path to the script. The process has completed and now you can use your Exchange 5.5 Address Book in Exchange 2000.
